Meet the Doctor
Michael A. Liska, DDS has extensive knowledge of all aspects of dentistry, including cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, endodontics, implant placement and full-mouth reconstruction. He believes in treating patients with respect and kindness at all times. He takes the time to listen to what they have to say and answer any questions they might have.
Patient comfort is of utmost importance and Dr. Liska uses state-of-the-art technology and procedures to make dental care not only efficient and accurate, but also gentle and comfortable.
Dr. Liska grew up in Falls City, Texas. He has two daughters, Carrie and Sarah, and two grandchildren, Ethan and Dylan, who live in the San Antonio area.
Advanced training and education
Dr. Liska graduated from Texas A& M University at Kingsville. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston.
While in dental school he was one of only 24 nationally selected students invited to be part of the “Advanced Modular Self Directed Curriculum Program,” which is an intensive doctoral training program offered nowhere else in the world, designed for students with a 4.0 grade point average in their undergraduate degrees.
From 2009 through 2012, Dr. Liska also completed an extensive amount of training with the American Dental Implant Association and he holds a Fellowship and Mastership in Oral Implantology.
After completing dental school, Dr. Liska served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Fort Hood, Texas where he gained specialty training and experience. Dr. Liska was rated in the top 5% of dentists in the US Army worldwide. While in the army, he received extensive training in reconstructive dentistry as he treated many veteran patients from Vietnam with severe facial damage. He was ranked as number one Captain and was a candidate for General of the US Army Dental Care. He even volunteered to train and supervise dentists in the army that were performing below standard.
His dedication and skill earned him a training position at the Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California. He was even offered advancement to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. but chose to begin his private practice in Pleasanton, Texas, serving the dental needs of the community while raising his family.
Dr. Liska is dedicated to his knowledge of the latest procedures and techniques and attends more than 100 hours of post-doctoral continuing education a year; much more than the required 12 hours per year in order to maintain a dental license. He continues to pursue a level of advanced training in dental and implant technology so that he can bring the highest level of care and excellence to his patients.
Extensive surgery experience
Dr. Liska has over 35 years experience performing dental surgery, from simple to the most complex restorative challenges. He took his first bone grafting seminar in Miami through the American Dental Implant Association and was urged to take a mastership program. He completed this training in two years. He was later invited to instruct a group of doctors in Brazil where he taught dental implant procedures on live patients.
Awards & recognitions
In 1998 Dr. Liska was nominated by the dental community for Texas Dentist of the Year. Only a few dentists are nominated each year out of the more than 5,000 dentists practicing in Texas. Additionally, he has received Official Recognition from the office of the Governor of Texas in 1994 and 1997 for his work in the Texas Public School System Campaign to prevent drug abuse, violence and illiteracy.
In July of 2002, Dr. Liska was selected as 1 of 200 internationally appointed delegates to the Academy of General Dentistry’s (AGD) House of Delegates, and served during the Academy’s 48th annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. As a delegate, Dr. Liska was part of the governing body, with the responsibility of voting on policies that affect over 36,000 member dentists of the AGD as well as much of the dental community.
Dr. Liska considers community work of utmost importance, and has made a commitment to educate his patients, staff and the community around him on the advances in care that modern dental techniques have made and the benefits these advances can bring to his patients to both raise the quality of their life and extend their life. Dr. Liska has spoken at a number of schools about oral hygiene.
In 1992, 1997 and 2003, Dr. Liska was interviewed by CBS television for his use of advanced dental technology, highlighting his office as one of the first in the country to offer services using these technologies. Dr. Liska also uses state-of-the-art technology such as intraoral cameras and digital X-rays to give his patients the best dental care possible.
From 1997 to 2000, Dr. Liska served four terms as president of the Academy of General Dentistry for the San Antonio region of Texas. He is the first person from outside Bexar County to have held this position and honor. During his 4-year term, membership increased by 25%, the amount of continuing education provided to members increased by over 700% and the treasury increased by over 400%. He continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.
