State-of-the-art Bone Grafting & Sinus Augmentation
Dr. Liska provides patients who have low levels of jawbone with several options for increasing their ability to receive dental implants healthily and successfully. His advanced training and broad experience with complex restorative cases gives him the required skill to effectively reverse jaw bone loss in most cases.
The negative effects of bone loss
When a tooth is lost and the open space in the gums is left unfilled, the jawbone begins to deteriorate beneath where the tooth root once was. This is because the jawbone requires the pressure of chewing to stimulate the bone and maintain its density.
Tooth loss from disease or extractions can cause bone “resorption,” which is essentially when the bone dissolves. The longer a tooth is left missing, the more bone that is lost, and over time the jaw becomes weaker and thinner and more susceptible to fractures. Certain factors, such as wearing removable dentures can accelerate the process of resorption due to the pressure and rubbing against the gums.
As bone loss progresses it can make you appear older than you actually are. It can even create problems with your bite and cause jaw pain and issues with TMJ (the temporomandibular joint). A weaker chewing ability can also result in malnutrition from lack of ability to consume some healthy foods.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting is a safe and effective procedure done to increase the level of bone in the jaw by adding bone graft material, either from the patient’s own body or by using synthetic bone material. In some cases, Dr. Liska may need to increase the level of bone to support a dental implant or for other restoration procedures. He will determine the most suitable grafting technique for you and can even do bone grafting at the same time as the implant placement.
Dr. Liska has extensive training and experience using advanced bone grafting techniques to increase the amount of bone in a patient’s jaw. Dr. Liska has access to some of the world’s best materials for bone grafting and keeps in contact with industry leaders in the quickly advancing field of bone grafting and implant technology.
What’s a sinus lift?
A sinus augmentation, or sinus lift, is a surgical procedure done to raise the sinus membrane and insert bone grafting material into the upper jaw. A sinus lift procedure can be performed at the time of implant placement, making for more rapid healing times and reduced chances of post-operative complications.
Dr. Liska is very skilled in performing sinus lifts. He has extensive surgical experience and additional training from the American Dental Implant Association. He even received a mastership in oral implantology and later became an instructor for other dentists on related surgical procedures.
Advanced surgical procedures
Dr. Liska can perform sinus lifts in two different ways, depending on which technique is best for the patient. The first method is called the “lateral window” procedure, where Dr. Liska will make an opening (window) in the side wall of the sinus and gently lift up the membrane so he can set the bone graft inside.
The second procedure is less invasive, and is Dr. Liska’s preferred method. It can be used with most patients unless the amount of bone in the sinus floor is very thin. This procedure involves using an osteotome to gently tap the sinus floor and stimulate bone growth by making small fissures until it reaches a sufficient level to support implants. This method provides a less traumatic and minimally invasive solution that saves the patient time and money.
